I once had a teacher say that fiction is a fine blend of memory and imagination, but as I continue to explore the lives of characters rooted in the experience of my ancestors, my community, and in response to specific moments in time, I see the importance of getting not only detail, but context, atmosphere and perspective right. I revise my teacher’s definition of fine fiction to read—a fluid blend of memory, imagination and historical accuracy.
