VONA fosters the development of personal and political writing and engages in the work of social justice all while building a global community of writers. Apply today!

June 21-27, 2026

The premier multi-genre workshop for BIPOC Writers, VONA is a Home where writers of color come to hone their craft and be in community.

Each summer VONA gathers esteemed faculty to work with emerging writers of color to explore elements of craft, issues of culture, works of social justice and practices of literary production.  VONA’s founders created the workshops for those underserved and unable to find writing communities of color outside of academic institutions.  We continue to uphold and create space for all BIPOC writers of color whose writing samples demonstrate a story in need of telling and a voice deserving of mentorship regardless of the writer’s publications or degrees.

While VONA’s online program offers flexibility and expands the reach beyond the continental US borders, we ask for no less of a commitment of your time and dedication.

This is not a program you can fit in between business meetings and a full plate of family obligations. There will be daily workshop meetings, one-on-ones with your residency instructor, faculty panels and readings, all on top of the hours you’ll need to spend writing and reading assigned pages to provide nuanced and thoughtful critique to your cohort.

The VONA Summer Program is a commitment: to yourself and to the others walking this road with you.

Any writer of color committed to their craft and eager to join a community of writers may apply. Click here to complete the application, including submitting a writing sample of either poetry or prose (published or unpublished). The writing sample must not exceed 15 pages and be saved in pdf or doc format. (Full writing sample guidance is listed on the application.)
